My Older Sister the Shopaholic (7 Images)
~ Saturday, August 19, 2023 Blog Post ~
My older and only sibling loves shopping. I think this costly hobby started in the early 90s when my parents would take us to the mall every weekend to eat fast food or engage in fine dining, watch the latest Hollywood movies, purchase our weekly groceries, and buy stuffs we like.
As millennials, my older sister and I were exposed to cable TV. At home, we usually watched MTV, HBO, and so forth during our teenage years. Our generation was exposed to media figures promoting intense consumerism or being a shopaholic such as Paris Hilton.
My sister loves clothes, shoes, bags, her smartphone, accessories, designer perfumes like Polo Ralph Lauren, Estée Lauder, Guess, Tommy Hilfiger, Givenchy, Chanel, Dolce & Gabbana, and so on. Our home became a warehouse.
As for me, I’m not into shopping. My older sister and I are polar opposites. I hate shopping and I have written so much about this personal characteristic.
I’m very frugal. I ensure that my personal financial life is structured or organized. I prefer cooking at home, fine dining, dining out, and luxury hotel staycations. I recently cooked fusilli pasta and chicken karaage. I really love good food.
This week, I found my older sister’s JCPenney Classic store credit charge card at home. This shopping card symbolizes her intense consumerist and shopaholic behavior. Today, my older sister still loves online shopping.
However, my Mommy has helped her curb this financially destructive hobby. My older sister must have had this Compulsive Buying Disorder, although she has refused to undergo treatment. Being a shopaholic is a type of addiction and it certainly has many negative impacts on one’s personal finances.
At this point, my older sister strives to avoid unnecessary shopping as having Compulsive Buying Disorder surely has had adverse effects on her finances. I have convinced her to stop shopping for things she does not need at all such as clothes and shoes for she has them already, and in fact, lots of them.
