Suze Orman is an American financial expert, author, TV host, and motivational speaker. Her financial expertise was such impactful that CNBC gave her the opportunity to host her own show “The Suze Orman Show” in 2002 for which she won the Gracie Award in 2006. In addition, she is known for her numerous books in which she has covered different financial topics.

Early Life

Orman’s real name is Susan Lynn ‘Suze’ Orman, who was born on June 5, 1951, in Chicago in a Jewish family. Her father was from Russia and worked at a chicken factory, while her mother was from Romania and worked as a local religious official.

In 1976, Orman received a B.A. degree in social work from the University of Illinois. Due to financial issues in her family, she had to quit her university studies, after which she moved to California, where she worked as a waitress at the Buttercup Bakery.

After her job, she wanted to have her own restaurant for which she had managed to collect $52,000 from her savings and well-wishers. Puzzled on how to utilize such a large amount of money, she went to Merrill Lynch but, she lost all her money after following an ill-advice of a broker. Her bitter experience led her to study finance in depth.

Orman got married to Kathy Travis in 2010, and she is very open about her being a lesbian, which she openly proclaimed in 2007.

After Orman lost all her investment in trading options, she worked as an account executive for Merrill Lynch and learned about different types of investments. She trained herself for a couple of years, and then in 1983, she switched to Prudential Bache Securities as a vice- president.

In 1987, after gaining intimidating financial skills, she formed her own financial firm- Suze Orman Financial Group, in California. While running her own firm for several years, she wrote her first booklet, “The Facts on Single Premium Whole Life.”

Following her booklet, she wrote three books that were published between 1997 and 1999; “The 9 Steps to Financial Freedom”, “You Earned it Don’t Lose it,” and “The Courage to be Rich.” Some of her other books are The Road to Wealth, The Lessons of Life, and The Laws of Money.

Witnessing her reaching atop the success ladder of finances, CNBC aired her show- The Suze Orman Show in 2002. She appeared at the Oprah Winfrey Show in 2008 and gave away copies of “Women and Money”; her book which recorded nearly two million downloads. She was later seen in Oprah’s Allstars in 2011 and also premiered on a TV series under Oprah Winfrey Network, America’s Money Class with Suze Orman. She has written columns in various magazines and online platforms.

Out of numerous awards that Orman has bagged, here are a few to mention. In 1999, Orman received the Motivational Book Award for her book “The Courage to be Rich.” By 2002, she received the lifetime achievement in Business Journalism by TJFR Group News Luminaries Award.
