Catalogue Note

Special Edition Silver Dollar by Tim Noble and Sue Webster was specially commissioned on the occasion of the Pop Art Is… exhibition at Gagosian Gallery in London. This major exhibition, Pop Art Is…, marked the fiftieth anniversary of Richard Hamilton’s visionary definition of ‘Pop art.’ The present example was exhibited alongside works by Marcel Duchamp, Jasper Johns, Roy Lichtenstein, Robert Rauschenberg, James Rosenquist, Ed Ruscha and Andy Warhol among others who helped contribute to the development of Pop art.

“Pop Art is: Popular (designed for a mass audience), Transient (short term solution), Expendable (easily-forgotten), Low cost, Mass produced, Young, Witty, Sexy, Gimmicky, Glamorous, Big Business… This is just the beginning…”

RICHARD HAMILTON, 1957

The present example is number 1 from an edition of 3 and was executed using mirror polished stainless steel further setting Special Edition Silver Dollar apart from other works by the artists in this series. Echoing the principles of Pop art, Tim Noble and Sue Webster cross all boundaries between high and low culture in creating their installations referencing punk culture, globalization and love. Within the context of the Pop Art Is… exhibition, the present example sparked highly engaging artistic dialogue in regards to methods of seriality and repetition, the use of synthetic materials as well as media images, and references to mass production are visible proof that the concept of Pop is still vital in contemporary art.

Since the late 1980s, collaborators Tim Noble and Sue Webster have been known for their shadow sculptures built from objects like household garbage, taxidermy, and scrap metal. Under directed light, the assemblages cast recognizable shadows, often self-portraits. In a series of Noble and Webster’s light sculptures, they use computer light sequencing to flash messages of love and hate, referencing shop-front-type signage and carnival shows of British seaside towns. Merging form and anti-form, high culture and anti-culture, their anti-monuments explore psychology and the way we attach meaning to images.
