On Thursday, October 17, 2024, I was able to visit the Tokyo Stock Exchange and the Bank of Japan which are both in Chuo City in Tokyo, Japan. As a personal finance journalist, I’m beyond elated with this travel experience. I have blogged about the world’s stock exchanges. Additionally, I have written several blog posts about the webinars I watched which media outfit Nikkei organized. Many of them were about Japan’s ambition to become the world’s leading asset management and financial center.
Japan is the world’s fourth-largest economy as of 2024, per Forbes India. By nominal gross domestic product or GDP, the East Asian economic giant is behind the United States, China, and Germany. Based on the data released by the International Monetary Fund, Japan’s GDP per capita or PPP was US$54,184 in 2024. Furthermore, in 2022, Japan constituted 4.2 percent of the world’s economy on a nominal basis.
This year, I am so glad and grateful for the travel opportunity with my father. I turned 40 years young and made this milestone year a travel year for myself. I must remark that visiting the Tokyo Stock Exchange (TSE) and the Bank of Japan are among my life’s fantastic highlights ! The TSE is a building serving as an office. The trading floor and trading bell are visible and I had myself photographed with them. However, trading happens digitally already and not on the bourse’s trading floor anymore.
Moreover, I witnessed an exhibit of images displaying the TSE’s notable visitors like Japan’s then Crown Prince Naruhito — he is now the Emperor; foreign dignitaries; musicians; athletes; and so forth. My Dad and I also witnessed the TSE’s history and explored its museum. Japan’s bourse is surrounded by financial institutions like the Mizuho Bank, which is one of the three Big Banks in Japan, and securities brokerages like Phillip Capital.
As for the Bank of Japan, we walked around the building and I touched its walls. Surrounding the Japanese central bank are financial institutions, including two of Japan’s Big 3 Banks: Sumitomo Mitsui Banking Corporation and the MUFG Bank, Japan’s largest bank. My Dad wanted coffee and we purchased his drink at the Kinza Restaurant beside the Bank of Japan.
I absolutely love Japan and I will always visit this country ! I’m also considering working here at some point, acquiring a residential property, and immigrating !
