“Married to a Miser” and 5 Other Old Articles [12 Images]
~ Wednesday, April 5, 2023 Blog Post ~
It has been my hobby to collect educative newspaper and magazine clippings of articles related to personal finance, investing, international economics, finance, and other fields related to money for as long as I can recall.
This week, I had the time to go over my files and I found five informative articles which I gathered back in our family’s house in the Philippines. What I find fascinating is that these educational essays are available online, even though most of them are over 20 years old already.
My well-educated and smart parents used to read the leading Philippine broadsheets to get their dose of the day’s news when we were still based in the Southeast Asian country.
These newspapers include the Philippine Star, the Manila Bulletin, Daily Tribune, Manila Times, and so forth. My parents also read intellectually informative magazines for various professions, and among them are Time, Life, military magazine Asia-Pacific Defense Forum, The Economist, and Nursing Spectrum.
From these intellectually enriching habits of my Daddy and Mommy, I benefited intellectually as well as they complemented my hobby of learning about the world, especially my lifelong interest: Finance.
The enriching and well-written articles I found this week from my files are the following. I also photographed them and uploaded their images below:
- “Married to a Miser” by Cecile Lopez Lilles, Philippine Star, March 26, 2008
2. “Card Sharp” by Alexandra Kay, Real Simple magazine, December 2007
3. “How Do You Know If This Is It?” by Enrique Y. Gonzalez, Philippine Star, July 12, 2010

4. “High Stakes Winners” by James Collins, Time Magazine, February 19, 1996

5. “The Art of the Deal” by John Greenwald, Time Magazine, February 19, 1996

I enjoyed revisiting these financially educational articles. I particularly love “High Stakes Winners,” which discussed the fortunes of IPO billionaires. I find this Time Magazine article very interesting for it included details about the late Apple co-founder Steve Jobs and Netscape Navigator maker Marc Andreessen.
The latter is also Silicon Valley venture capital firm Andreessen Horowitz’s general partner and co-founder. In the 1990s during the early stages of the Internet, these visionary techpreneurs struck it rich with their prowess in software engineering and entrepreneurship.
Many firms mentioned in “High Stakes Winners” that existed during the Web 1 era are unfamiliar to me as I suppose many of them have already rebranded, merged with, gotten acquired by another company, and so forth after 27 years as this Time magazine article was published in 1996.
