Don’t expect anyone else to financially support you.

“Don’t expect anyone else to support you. Maybe you have a trust fund, maybe you have a wealthy spouse; but you never know when either one might run out.”
— Baz Luhrmann, “Everybody’s Free (to Wear Sunscreen)”
I totally agree with the financially insightful lines above from Baz Luhrmann’s song featured in the 1996 romantic crime film “Romeo + Juliet.” I also encountered a colleague from about 13 years ago whose father advised her never to financially depend on her partner or husband.
What if your husband suddenly dies? Or what if your husband is lazy ? Or he is a slacker, and he is really not serious with his job and earning a living for himself and his family? Or he is immature in his outlook, regardless of his age? Or he is neither financially literate, financially responsible, nor financially savvy and he does not know how to save and invest his hard-earned funds?
Thus, we should never expect anyone else to financially support us but ourselves. It doesn’t matter whether or not we are married or unmarried or whatever our circumstances are. At all times and at all costs, we should learn how to make a living, not to mention to make hay while the sun shines.
